Can I have acupuncture and Chinese herbs during pregnancy?

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are safe therapies during pregnancy and they don’t have any side effects. They help to support every stage of pregnancy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), of what acupuncture and Chinese herbs are a part of, has been practiced for thousands of years to support pregnant women. We recommend seeing a qualified TCM practitioner who is aware of particular points and herbs to avoid during pregnancy.

Acupuncture may be effective in managing symptoms that arise during pregnancy. This includes lower back, hip and pelvic pain, sciatica, nausea, anxiety, reflux, constipation, headaches, muscle cramps, oedema (swelling), pregnancy-induced hypertension (pre-eclampsia), insomnia and fatigue.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs may also be effective in the treatment of threatened miscarriage. Although light vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy is quite common, some women and couples may choose TCM therapies if they have previously experienced a miscarriage, or if they have undergone IVF. When treating threatened miscarriage, we look to strengthen the Kidneys and Spleen and clear any Blood-Heat. However, it must be stated that this treatment does not guarantee that the pregnancy will continue.

In TCM, lifestyle factors are important in a healthy pregnancy. We recommend gentle exercise balanced with adequate rest, a nourishing diet and emotional wellbeing.

Lastly, here is some advice from the ancient Chinese text Admonitions to Ladies: “A pregnant woman carries with her the finest piece of jade. She should enjoy all things, look at fine pictures and be attended by handsome servants.”
